ILOCOS SUR COMMEMORATES KANNAWIDAN FEST 2022
It’s
the year 2022. Another year have passed and still we are in a pandemic. Despite
this problem that we have for the past two years, on the brighter side, we are
slowly recovering and adjusting to the new normal. That includes most people
getting vaccinated; establishments opening once again; programs, celebrations
and occasions being allowed to happen; and less strict protocols when going out
as long as everyone still observe the implemented protocols such as wearing of
face mask, social distancing, and have been vaccinated. Just like the last
time, the Longganisa Festival was held both virtually and physically.
Let’s
head back to the main topic. Ilocos Sur definitely makes sure there’s always a
way to commemorate it’s festival. The Kannawidan festival in the Province of Ilocos
Sur commemorates the separation of the two Ilocos provinces in 1818. This
festival is a showcase of indigenous performances, religious rituals, as well
cooking demos featuring the best of Ilocano dishes. This year is already it’s 204th
anniversary. The celebration was officially opened by the provincial government
headed by Gov. Ryan Luis Singson, together with Vice Gov. Jeremias C. Singson,
Sangguniang Panlalawigan members, and officials and employees of local
government units and national government agencies.
The festival contained a ton of programs. During the opening ceremony, “Tadek Ken Balliwes,” was performed by the Suyo Indigenous Peoples Community Group from Suyo, Ilocos Sur. It is a traditional dance that expresses jubilation over victory, thanksgiving and other more important events. On its first night, it was welcomed with the dancing fountain show, a drone light show, and fireworks display brightly blazed at the top of the New Legislative Building right after. Coronation of the Saniata Ti Ylocos beauty pageant happened on the second day. The Chef Wars Cooking Competition was held the same day. It was a showcase of creativity and skill. The next day was an LGBTQ Night with an event entitled Your Face Sounds Familiar, The Lip Sync Battle.
Not
to mention, the Kannawidan Festival also had other events aside from the said competitions.
A dog show was held, featuring American bullies on the third day of the
festival; And people who are car and motorcycle enthusiasts enjoyed the car and
motor show that was held last February 5. Not only those, but other significant
events were Tinattoan, Bike Race, Game Fowl, Rhythm Fest and the much awaited
Bakbakan sa Ilocos Sur.
Over
all, it may be said that the pandemic restricts social gatherings and
celebrations to keep us safe and away from the virus. Either way, I am glad
that we are slowly recovering from the pandemic and adjusting to the new normal
as well. And it is giving us more freedom to be happy for once and celebrate
festivals that we never got to celebrate last two years ago. We are Filipinos,
and Filipinos always find ways to smile even through their darkest times. We
never give up, and together, we will soon defeat and win the battle against Covid-19.
